Practice: The Gratitude Visit
One of the most powerful positive psychology exercises is the "Gratitude Visit."
- Think of someone: Choose someone who has been especially kind to you, but whom you have never properly thanked.
- Write a letter: Compose a letter to this person detailing specifically what they did, how it affected your life, and how you often think of their contribution. Be specific and heartfelt.
- Deliver it (if possible): The most impactful way is to visit them and read the letter aloud. If that's not possible, calling them and reading it is also powerful.
This exercise has been shown to significantly increase happiness for both the writer and the recipient.
