Exploring Positive Psychology
Positive Psychology is the scientific study of what makes life most worth living. It focuses on the strengths that enable individuals and communities to thrive.
Unlike traditional psychology, which often focuses on dysfunction and illness, positive psychology is concerned with well-being, happiness, and fulfillment. It was founded on the belief that people want to lead meaningful lives and cultivate what is best within themselves.
The PERMA Model
Dr. Martin Seligman, a founder of positive psychology, developed the PERMA model to explain the five core elements of happiness and well-being:
- P - Positive Emotion: Experiencing feelings like joy, hope, and love.
- E - Engagement: Being fully absorbed in activities (also known as 'flow').
- R - Relationships: Having authentic connections with others.
- M - Meaning: Belonging to and serving something you believe is bigger than the self.
- A - Accomplishment: Pursuing success and mastery.
